Parkinson's Disease

About Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, coordination, and balance. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine gradually break down or stop functioning. Dopamine is essential for smooth, controlled muscle activity, so its loss leads to the hallmark symptoms of the condition.

Common signs include tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement, and changes in posture or walking. Many people also experience non‑movement symptoms such as sleep disturbances, mood changes, fatigue, or difficulties with speech and swallowing. Symptoms vary widely from person to person and tend to develop gradually over time.

Although there is currently no cure, a combination of medication, physical therapy, speech therapy, and lifestyle strategies can significantly improve quality of life. Early diagnosis and ongoing care help individuals manage symptoms, maintain independence, and stay active in daily life.

How Therapy Can Help Parkinson's Disease

Physical and Speech Therapy and Parkinson's Disease

Speech and physical therapy play a powerful, complementary role in supporting people living with Parkinson’s disease, helping them maintain independence and quality of life as symptoms change over time. Physical therapy focuses on the body’s movement systems, working to counteract the stiffness, slowness, and balance difficulties that often accompany Parkinson’s. Through guided exercises, targeted stretching, and movement retraining, physical therapists help individuals improve their gait, strengthen their muscles, and reduce the risk of falls. Many people find that physical therapy not only enhances their mobility but also restores confidence in their ability to navigate daily activities, from getting out of a chair to walking in crowded spaces.

Speech therapy addresses the communication and swallowing challenges that can arise as Parkinson’s affects the muscles of the face, throat, and vocal cords. A speech‑language pathologist helps individuals strengthen their voice, improve clarity, and regain control over breathing patterns that support speech. Therapy may also focus on cognitive‑communication skills such as memory, attention, and problem‑solving, which can be affected by the condition. For those experiencing difficulty swallowing, speech therapy provides strategies and exercises that make eating and drinking safer and more comfortable.

Together, these therapies offer a holistic approach to managing Parkinson’s disease. They help individuals stay active, connected, and engaged in their daily lives, reinforcing the idea that while Parkinson’s brings challenges, there are meaningful ways to adapt, grow, and continue participating fully in the world around them.
