What is Muscular Dystrophy (MS)?

Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic conditions that cause the muscles to gradually weaken over time. Because there are more than 30 different types, the condition can look very different from one person to another, some forms begin in infancy, others appear in childhood or adulthood, and the rate of progression can vary. What all types share is that the genes responsible for keeping muscles healthy don’t work as they should, leading to muscle fibers that break down more easily and become weaker over the years. Depending on the type, muscular dystrophy may affect the muscles used for movement, breathing, swallowing, or even the heart. Some people experience mild symptoms and remain active for many years, while others face more significant challenges early in life. Although there is no cure yet, treatments such as therapy, medications, and supportive care can help maintain mobility, manage symptoms, and improve quality of life.

How Can Therapy Help with Muscular Dystrophy?

Experience the Benefits of Physical Therapy at Empowerize Therapy Center

Physical therapy helps people with muscular dystrophy stay mobile and maintain strength for as long as possible. Because the condition gradually weakens muscles, therapists focus on gentle strengthening, stretching to prevent tightness, and low‑impact exercise that keeps joints flexible and movement safer. These sessions can also help slow the development of contractures, stiff joints that limit motion, and support better posture and balance. Over time, physical therapy becomes an important tool for preserving independence, reducing discomfort, and helping individuals move in ways that protect their muscles.

Speech‑language therapy supports areas that can be affected when the muscles of the face, mouth, and throat weaken. A therapist helps individuals improve communication skills by teaching strategies to make speech clearer or by introducing alternative communication tools when needed. They also address swallowing and feeding challenges, which can arise as throat muscles weaken. By strengthening the muscles involved in speech and swallowing and teaching safe techniques, speech therapy helps people stay connected, nourished, and engaged in daily life.

Together, these therapies provide practical, compassionate support that adapts as needs change, helping individuals with muscular dystrophy maintain function, comfort, and quality of life.
