What is dementia and Alzheimer's?

Dementia is a general term for a decline in memory, thinking, and everyday functioning that is significant enough to affect daily life. It is caused by several different diseases. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause, and it develops as brain cells are gradually damaged over time.

Early signs often include forgetting recent events or conversations. Later stages may bring confusion, changes in behavior, and challenges with communication, movement, or swallowing.

Dementia becomes more common with age, but it is not a normal part of aging, and it can also affect younger adults. Recognizing changes early helps families find support and plan care that protects dignity and quality of life.

Common signs and challenges

  • Forgetting recent events or conversations
  • Repeating questions
  • Trouble finding words
  • Difficulty following conversation
  • Getting lost in familiar places
  • Trouble with daily routines
  • Unsteady walking or falls
  • Coughing or difficulty swallowing

How therapy may help

Speech TherapyBuilds memory and communication strategies such as memory books, routines, and cueing, helps the person express needs and understand others, and evaluates swallowing to keep eating and drinking safe. Coaches caregivers on communication that reduces frustration.
Occupational TherapySimplifies daily routines and adapts the home for safety and independence with dressing, bathing, and meals.

Every plan starts with an evaluation. Which disciplines are involved depends on your goals and what the evaluation shows.
